My thanks to the committee for asking me to judge and for looking after me so well at the show. I consider it a great honour to be asked to judge a club show. Many thanks also to my very able stewards Jane Palmer and Glenn Woolley.

I must thank everyone for the fantastic entry you gave me, I was honoured to have the opportunity to go over your lovely beardies…. in many classes I wished I had more red cards to hand out. I especially get great pleasure from judging puppies and veterans…both ends of the scale.

In several classes I had some very hard decisions to make because of the high quality of the beardies. However, I didn’t find as many of the correct flat square skulls that our breed should have….please, let’s not lose that. One thing that does disappoint me though, is that so many have obviously had the hair on their feet scissored. On a plus note, there were not as many weak narrow under-jaws as last time I judged, and I didn’t find any dirty teeth.

DOGS

Minor Puppy Dog (7, 2 abs)
1st McErlane’s Talraz Royal Ascot. Almost 8 months. Lovely correct head and expression. Good mouth. Well balanced puppy with good lay of shoulder and upper arm. Nice length of rib and correct croup. Very smooth on the move, keeping his topline. Nicely handled. Happy little chap, liked him a lot.
2nd Jenkins & Lawrence’s Colepark Eternal Legend. Just a month younger than 1st. Another lovely head and mouth. Nice neck going into nice front assembly, complemented by equally good rear-end. Low hocks and good tailset. Nice movement. Overall a very nice puppy.
3rd Kershaw’s Deedledee Jayzee. Eye catching very dark slate with darkest of eyes. Beautiful expression. Good head and neck. Nice lay of shoulder. Would have preferred just a tad more length of ribcage. Good croup. Beautiful coat. Steady on the move. Completed a trio of quality puppies.

Puppy Dog (7, 1 abs)
1st Baker’s Malandex Xplicitly Done. This brown boy caught my eye when he walked into the ring. Strong masculine head, eyes toning with coat. Nice length of neck. Liked his length of upper arm. Correct shaped ribcage with short loin. Good slope of croup and turn of stifle. Moved exceptionally well for one so young. Delighted to hear this win gives him his Junior Warrant. BPD & Best Puppy In Show.
2nd Talraz Royal Ascot.
3rd Szmidt’s Moppetswood Celtic Magic. Nice head, mouth and expression. Good neck. Lay of shoulder good but would have liked a longer upper-arm and slightly more length of rib. Moved well. Good coat and well presented.

Junior Dog (4, 0 abs)
1st Manghall & Burfitt’s Breaksea GI Blues. Just out of puppy, lovely blue boy. Excellent head with correct shape skull. Good pigment and eyes toning with coat. Beautiful lay of shoulder with excellent length of upper arm. Correct length to height ratio. Ribcage was good length with correct loin. Nice slope of croup. Moved really well as his construction suggested he would.
2nd Atkins & Charles’s Snikkles Sea Lavender JW. Almost 18 months. Very nice blue boy, again with excellent head, pigment and eyes. Good front and rear angles. Would prefer slightly more length of rib. Good slope of croup and nice low hocks. Moved well.
3rd Richardson’s Caramac Change The Beat. 16 months brown. Nice head and skull. Excellent pigment and mouth. Lovely eyes with gentle expression. Matching front and rear assemblies. Moved well. Finer than 1st & 2nd.

Yearling Dog (4, 1 abs)
1st Breaksea GI Blues
2nd Molloy’s Nellbrook Unexpected For Pyesbridge JW. Nice youngster. Good head and skull. Darkest of eyes. Good neck flowing into a good front assembly. Rear quarters in balance with front. Moved well. Lost out to 1st on length of rib.
3rd Martin’s Talibee Shining Star. 22 months. Balanced throughout. Nice head and mouth. Good eyes, expression and pigment.

Veteran Dog (4, 2 abs)
1st Pickup’s Bendale Time After Time. 8 years. Lovely head and expression. Well angulated front and rear. Good length to height ratio. Correct slope of croup and low hocks. Coat and body in great condition. Moved very well, in tune with his handler.
2nd Szmidt’s Moppetswood Touch Of Magic. Almost 13 years but did not look it. Same comments as those for 1st, just preferred movement of winner. A credit to his owner.

Novice Dog (7, 1 abs)
1st Moppetswood Celtic Magic
2nd Colepark Eternal Legend
3rd White & Ellis’s Karmeliann Stargazer. Very nice puppy. Lovely expression. Angulation good all round, everything in the right place. Settled on the move and moved well. Wealth of coat and sympathetically handled.

Graduate Dog (7, 1 abs)
1st Thorpe’s Claudalla Jacob Marley At Merrythorpe JW. Good head and mouth. Good neck flowing into a nice shoulder and upper-arm placement. Nice rear assembly with good turn of stifle and low hocks. Moved well.
2nd Breaksea GI Blues
3rd Everill’s Brodaty E Male To Emulas. Dark brown boy who caught my eye as a puppy. Very nice type. I feel he is inbetween stages at the moment and needs time to come to his best.

Post-Graduate Dog (6, 0 abs)
1st Pickup’s Pipadene Time To Recap. Almost 3 yrs. Very masculine head and skull with dark eyes and pigment. Excellent layback of shoulder and length of upper arm. Good length and shape of ribcage and short loin. Balanced back end. Moved well.
2nd Salter’s Bargemon Mabuni Kenzo. Another one with very good front and rear assemblies and correct ribcage. He is balanced all through. Just felt that winner had the edge on movement.
3rd Betts’ Pipadene Time To Review. Litter brother to winner, but not as strong a head. Also felt that winner had the better length of upper arm and ribcage. But, he was balanced front and rear and moved well.

Limit Dog (7, 0 abs)
1st Brooks & Grundy’s Braddabrook Extra Time With Fraglestone. Lovely dog that I have not had the chance to run my hands over before. Masculine flat skull, good neck flowing into excellent shoulders. Nice long upper-arm, correct ribcage. Short strong loin backed up by good slope of croup. Rear angles matched front ones. Covered the ground with ease as his proportions suggested he would.
2nd Ritchie’s Kirstancourt Kiss N Tail. Lovely dog that I have always liked. He is a very nice shape all through. Many of my comments for winner apply but today I felt that 1st had the edge on movement.
3rd Buckley’s Wellknowe Knight Errand. Nice blue boy who has everything in the right place. Really good on the move and in tune with his handler.

breaksea allegro

Open Dog (3, 2 abs)
1st White & Ellis’s Breaksea Allegro JW ShCM. Stood alone but very deserving of his red rosette. Very masculine fawn. Eyes toning perfectly with his coat, good pigment. Lovely lay of shoulder and length of upper arm. Correct shape and length of ribcage with short strong loin. Good angle of croup and turn of stifle. Nice low powerful hocks. In good coat and body condition. Moved exceptionally well and in perfect tune with his handler. Nothing I would change about him. Delighted to award him BD and later R.B.I.S.

BITCHES

Minor Puppy Bitch (8, 2 abs)
1st Stead & Lewis’ Potterdale Eclipse. Almost 7 months dark slate, and what a little star. Very feminine with a lovely head and expression. Nice neck leading into an excellent front assembly. Correct length of rib and loin. Back end very good. Nice and steady on the move and very sympathetically handled. Best Puppy Bitch.
2nd Lawrence & Clarke’s Colepark Eternal Charm. This little brown girl has exactly the same birthday as winner. I found her slightly more ‘leggy’ at the moment but otherwise all my comments about the winner apply to her.
3rd White & Ellis’ Karmeliann Starstruck. Good head, eye and expression. Correct shoulder and length of rib, Balanced angulation. Well handled. Not quite as steady on the move today as 1st and 2nd. A trio of very promising puppies.

Puppy Bitch (7, 2 abs)
1st Sullivan’s Navillus Rainbow Chaser. Lovely 9 months puppy. Correct head and mouth. Good lay of shoulder and length of upper arm. Nice length of ribcage and short loin. Equally balanced rear assembly. Very feminine and so settled and composed. Moved well. Should have a promising future. Today just preferred the movement of the minor puppy winner in the challenge for best puppy bitch.
2nd Karmeliann Starstruck.
3rd Bowden’s Subessen Bit Of A Cheek.

Junior Bitch (9, 2 abs)
1st Nicholls-Ward’s Bumbleridge’s Lacey Locket. Very nice brown girl. Good head and expression. Nice front with good length of rib. Correct short loin. Good slope of croup and turn of stifle. Balanced all through. Moved very well keeping her topline.
2nd Richardson’s Caramac C’mon Ring My Bell. Pleasing outline. Nicely balanced head with good mouth and eye toning with coat. Firm topline. Harsh coat. Reminded me of one of my first beardies, could easily have taken her home.
3rd Pedder’s Breaksea Amazing Grace For Caldermist. Very nice blue girl who was balanced all through. Good on the move. Very unlucky to meet 1 and 2.

Yearling Bitch (8, 3 abs)
1st Edwards’ Nellbrook Just An Illusion. Exquisitely feminine but strongly made bitch. Slate, at the silvery stage. Nice head with good neck flowing into a good shoulder assembly. Good length and depth of ribcage with short loin. Really good on the move.
2nd Breaksea Amazing Grace For Caldermist
3rd Ritchie’s Bridus Between The Sheets With Cheryshd. Very well made girl who is between coats at the moment. Excellent mover.

Veteran Bitch (9, 2 abs)
I was spoilt for choice in this class and had to split hairs…. Every one of the 7 bitches in this class were a credit to their owners and I wished I’d had 7 red rosettes. It bodes well for the breed when we can see how well our older girls last.
1st Richards’ Elemark Hollyberry. 7 yr old very sound girl who I have always liked. Strong feminine head. Matching front and rear angulation. Good length to height ratios. Won on movement. Best Veteran in Show.
2nd Edwards’ Nellbrook Enchantment. Close decision….unlucky to meet 1st. All my remarks about winner apply here.
3rd Richardson’s CH.Caramac Chrystal Clear JW. 11 yrs old. One I have not had my hands on before and did not disappoint. A very worthy champion. Very balanced all through with matching angulation front and back. Sound as a bell.

Novice Bitch (10, 1 abs)
1st Bumbleridge’s Lacey Locket
2nd Navillus Rainbow Chaser
3rd Malcherczyk’s Clovamasq Wildasher. 6 yr old brown. Old fashioned girl. Beautiful correct head and expression. Balanced all round. Very steady on the move and held her topline at all times.

Graduate Bitch (5, 1 abs)
1st Harkin’s Claudalla Jenny Wren JW. Nicely made girl with good head, expression and mouth. Matching front and rear angles and low hocks. Just pipped the 2nd on movement.
2nd Kershaw’s Whistbrae Unchained Melody. Very nice girl in superb condition, with an expression to die for. Absolutely everything in the right place. Nice harsh coat.
3rd Campbell’s Willowmead Bluepoppi. Good head and mouth. Nicely made all through. Harsh jacket but not so much of it as 1 and 2. Also not quite so steady on the move.

Post-Graduate Bitch (6, 2 abs)
1st Richards’ Elemark Guelder Rose. Lovely dark slate girl who did not disappoint on running my hands over her. Correct flat skull. Good shoulder and excellent length of upper arm. Correct ribcage with short loin. Equally good rear assembly. Very steady mover and looks as though she could do a day’s work.
2nd Kochanawski’s Thornsky Tango In The Night. Top size strong but feminine brown bitch. Reminded me of her grandmother. Good all through and nicely balanced. Another steady mover. Very close decision between this one and winner.
3rd Hurry’s Ardensax Cordelia At Alcheringa. Nice brown bitch who has lovely movement. Would have preferred her a tad leaner.

Limit Bitch (9, 1 abs)
Can I just say this was a very difficult class to judge. So much quality in this class and so many had to go cardless.
1st Buckley’s Holtend Sweet Temptation. Very dark slate bitch. Eyes toning with coat. Honest and compact….good length to height ratios. Balanced front and rear angulation with low hocks. Not exaggerated in any way. Can see the older type in her. Moved very soundly. Reserve Best Bitch.
2nd Jemmett’s Westbere Whisper JW ShCM. Strongly made but very feminine bitch. This girl is really coming into her own now and I was splitting hairs between her and the winner who she was very unlucky to meet. She is extremely balanced. Good shoulder, length of upper arm, nice angle of croup and turn of stifle.
3rd Richardson’s Caramac Campanology. Medium slate very feminine bitch who has a lovely head and expression. Very nicely put together all through and good on the move.

Shilstone Foreign Affair brown bearded collie

Open Bitch (10, 4 abs)
1st Nicholson’s Shilstone Foreign Affair. One I have always liked and took my eye when she came into the ring. Dark brown bitch. Correct flat skull, eyes toning with her coat. Strong neck leading into a beautiful shoulder. Excellent length of upper arm. Just the right length of ribcage and short loin. Good angle of croup and nice turn of stifle. Loved her steady movement. Looked as though she could do a days work. Delighted to award her Best Bitch and Best in Show.
2nd Thorpe’s Merrythorpe Miss Daydream. Beautiful good sized bitch. Good head, eye and expression. Correct shoulder and length and depth of rib. Balanced angulation. Excellent movement and held her topline throughout.
3rd Manghall & Burfitt’s Breaksea Immortality. Beautiful head and expression on this compact girl. Balanced all through. Excellent movement. Totally in tune with her handler.
